Subliminal Projects proudly presents Visual Language: Vistas, a group exhibition featuring a survey of artists who expand and redefine the landscape genre, offering a compelling tribute to California. This exhibition marks the third iteration of Visual Language, an ongoing curatorial collaboration with UK-based Coates & Scarry that examines art as a communication medium within specific artistic genres.

California has long been regarded as a cultural and geographical frontier, celebrated globally as a symbol of beauty, freedom, and opportunity. The state is home to 39 million people and comprises six of the world’s major biomes: marine, freshwater, forest, grassland, desert, and tundra. The relationship between these diverse ecosystems and the interconnected urban landscapes has historically inspired powerful artistic expression. As a result, California’s unique environment has attained an iconic status, visually and thematically embedded within the pop-culture lexicon— the California Dream.

In the wake of the fires impacting Los Angeles, Visual Language: Vistas centers itself as a love letter to California, embodying our shared journey of healing, rebuilding, and reimagining. In an effort to support our community directly, a portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, providing emergency relief for artists and arts workers.

ABOUT COATES & SCARRY
Coates & Scarry are art dealers and curators based in the UK. They have worked in partnership for twelve years on projects and with institutions such as the Royal West Academy (RWA), Bristol City Museum, and other commercial galleries and project spaces. They have curated exhibitions in Hong Kong, NYC, London, Bristol, and Los Angeles, covering subjects on queer theory, identity, the environment, and the human condition.
